Step 1:

Visit this website: http://www.opheliaproject.org

Click on Schools, then K-12 Curriculum. Now click on each of the links and read the material for middle school.

Watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8i4PSMHdK2Q

Step 2:

Visit a bookstore or library, or use the Internet to identify books for children (ages 10-14) that address bullying. You will:

  • create a resource list of (10) ten books that address bullying and that are appropriate with middle-school students
    • include the complete reference for each book (title, author, publication year, and publisher)
  • select two of these titles to discuss in your paper
    • summarize the book in your own words (you should find this information easily on the Internet or the back of the book—you do not have to read the book)

Step 3:

Research helping students deal with bullying in middle school and how to stop bullying among this age group. The Internet is a great resource.  Try using phrases like “bullying in middle school”, “how to prevent bullying in middle school”, and using stories to teach about bullying” to search.

ESSAY

The assigned readings in Weeks 10 from the New Latino Studies Reader critically explore issues of gender and sexuality among Latino populations. They do so both historically (Ramon Gutierrez’s “The History of Latino Sexuality”) and contemporarily (Robert Smith’s “Gender Strategies, Settlement, and Transnational Life in the First Generation” and Lorena Garcia’s “She’s Old School Like That: Mother and Daughter Sex Talks”).All three articles in this section offer a sophisticated analysis of the way that manhood and womanhood is given cultural meaning among different generations of Latinos and Latinas in the United States.

Drawing upon Ramon Gutierrez’s historical analysis of “male honor” and “female shame,” discuss how these gender ideals have contemporary meaning in the lives of the Mexican and Puerto Rican subjects that Robert Smith and Lorena Garcia interviewed in their essays. How do cultural constructions of “male honor” and “female shame” impact on the lives of the first-generation Mexican immigrant couples that Smith interviewed and the second-generation Mexican and Puerto Rican young women that Garcia interviewed?Your essay must make use of all three of these essays in addressing the essay question posed.Make sure you begin with the Gutierrez essay and then discuss the Smith and Garcia articles.

Your essay will be evaluated on how carefully and successfully you directly draw from these three course readings in crafting your essay. It is the quality of the engagement with and use of the assigned readings that is key to this assignment. Please make sure that you include concrete examples taken from them and correctly cite the readings in writing your essay. As always; no first-person voice, personal experiences, or personal points of view should be included in your essay. I am only interested in you telling me what the authors of these essay have to say.You may use any footnoting style that you prefer (MLA, APA, or Chicago Manual of Style) as long as you are consistent. Please make sure to include a word count and bibliography at the end of your essay.

Please watch three movies and finish three questions below

Your answers should each be at least 400 words in length. They should display a grasp of the content of the films in question and an awareness of the issues discussed in class. Please focus on producing good close readings of the films and of your critical interpretations.

1. In Wong Kar-wai’s Chungking Express, the waitress, Faye at the Midnight Express, loves listening to loud music, particularly, “California Dreamin’” by the Mamas and Papas. Please consider how is the song “California Dreamin’” used throughout the second part of the film?

In the following conversation, Faye explains to Cop 633 about why she does that: Cop 633: You like noisy music?
Waitress: Yes. The louder the better. Stops me from thinking.
Cop 633: You don’t like to think? What do you like?

Waitress: Never thought about it.

What does that say about Faye’s personalities? How does Faye’s way of listening to music reveal about her life and her relationships? How does the usage of music help describe key questions of urban alienation and (lack of) effective communication in a postmodern city like Hong Kong?

2. In Ang Lee’s movie, Wedding Banquet, one important issue is how to deal with Chinese traditional values in the modern times. Please find cases in the movie that regard traditional values as oppressive forces and hindering the modernizing process. Please also find cases that argue for the opposite, which considers Chinese tradition as an adaptive and dynamic system that transforms itself to meet the modern challenges.

3. Zhang Yimou’s film, To Live, explores the intricate entanglements between the political and the personal lives in modern China. Whereas events in the political domain, such as the civil war and the Great Leap Forward movement, greatly controlled and changed people’s lives, do you think that the personal life is still able

in some respects to find a way to maintain its autonomy, to remain independent of the political domain? How is personal life in the film portrayed, compared with political life? To what extent do you agree that the personal life is able to triumph over the political life in this film? Please find moments in the movie to support your idea.

Website Project: Let’s Explore the World through Music

Create an informative website featuring the music of a specific culture that is not covered in Chapter 8 of the course text. “World Music” refers to music that is not based in the Western tradition of music. For example, a band from Europe would not be appropriate for this assignment. Post the link to your website at the WK8 “Let’s Explore the World through Music” Forum.  Make any commentary/explanation/introduction there if you like, not required.

Build your website using www.wix.com, which is free and easy to use. Wix features user-friendly drag and drop technology. Easily change or customize the website. All that is required to set-up an account is an email address and password. Here is a student guide for creating Wix websites. Wix also has an excellent Help Center to address any questions while creating your website.

The website featuring a style of World Music is to include the following:

1.  A summary of the chosen culture. Include a short history.

2.  A brief explanation of some beliefs and traditions of the culture.

3.  Description of the instruments used in that culture’s music.

4.  Explanation of some of the key attributes of the culture’s music.

5.  Specific Introduction to one piece of music from the culture. Include at least one example of the music, such as a link to YouTube performances.

The above elements can either be included on one page of your website or separated into different pages.

Include your name on your website. Your website should include photos and video, linked or embedded. Embedded photos and videos need to be cited.

Sources must be valid, academic sources (i.e., do not use websites such as Wikipedia or About.com). Your website should not contain more than 15% direct quotes and direct quotes must be in quotation marks. Direct quotes and paraphrased material must be cited in the body of the text and in a reference section.

After the website is completed and published, post a link to your website in the WK8: Exploring the World through Music thread in Forums by Sunday of Week 7 at 11:55pm (Eastern time).

Your project will be evaluated according to this grading rubric.

Note: If you are a military member serving overseas and have limited internet access that would prevent you from completing this project, contact your instructor for an alternate assignment.

Here are some samples of Wix websites. Let your creative imaginations inspire you to create your websites.

Writing

Issues in early childhood are vast and constantly changing. Your task is to write a brief research paper designed to go into greater depth about either a topic already discussed in the course, or the presentation of an issue in early childhood education not already discussed in the course. You will have to make an argument about why this topic is an issue and provide references for an outsider to access greater information. Your paper should be between three‐five pages in length and include the following information:

  • Topic description. Provide current information about the topic you have chosen.
  • Issue argument. Discuss why the topic is an “issue” in early childhood – what are the concerns/arguments that are current in early childhood.
  • Current positions. Given your topic, what are arguments made on either “side” of the issue.
  • Online references. Provide at least 3 online references that could be useful to an outsider reviewing this “issue.”

This paper will be turned in through “Turn‐it‐in.” This will ensure that you are not plagiarizing. Also, make sure you cite your statements. If you are unsure how to cite, please review APA referencing and citations (email your professor for more information if needed). You will be graded on grammar and spelling, so proofread your work.
