Respond to two colleagues with suggestions of additional strategies, best practices, or research for improving the process.

Ashley’s Post:

As an educator, one walks a fine line. Some disricts have a morality clause, where others do not. Despite that, teachers and those in the education field are held to a higher standard. We have to ethical and moral in our deeds as examples and leaders. The school system is one part of a pair that should work together, ethically, to create the best possible safe place to educate students. The school and community mist work together to best meet the needs of the stakeholders. In my district, we have someone that holds the position of the community Achieves Site Manager. This person is the liason between the schools and the Community Achieves program. The Community Achieves Program Coordinator is responsible for the implementation, supervision, and coordination of community partnerships, programs, and services developed to promote and sustain community engagement in support of targeted schools and communities ( “Community Achieves Coordinator”, 2012). We also have Family Involvement Specialist in the schools. The Family Involvement Specialist works with the community, parents, and their assigned school to foster relationships and partnerships between the school, community, and families. At my current school, one example of partnering with the community was a  class for familes from the area and parents of students on how to properly install car seats. As an added bonus, people received a free car seat for attending. Local police and EMTs were on hand to oversee and help install car seats. Another way that the school partners with the community is Fall Festival/Spring Fling. Both are events where people from the community come and take part in a family fun night, after school. This night involves games, face painting, bounce houses, and food vendors from the local area. One food truck owner has a child in my class. We also have local business come to promote from the area. Most recently, we had several representatives from the neighborhood fresh food market and gave out samples. As well as gave out recipe cards on quick, healthy, and organic meals to prepare.

All of this is to show and say that it takes a village to best educate students. To best meet the needs of students we need to “put our heads together and consider our next steps” (Laurete Education, 215).

Susan’s Post:

     I agree with the old African proverb – it takes a village to raise a child.  Growing up in my neighborhood, many of the neighbors looked out for all of us.  They would report to our parents any mischievous deeds or misconduct.  They helped and supported each other in the community and highly respected and supported the educators. 

  It is important to facilitate effective collaboration among community stakeholders.   When businesses and communities come together to build and enhance our schools, it causes our students, teachers and schools to have the resources they need.  Schools can collaborate with businesses to supply computers, I-pads, and other resources.   It allows small businesses and big corporations to give back to the community.   Collaborating with businesses encourages businesses to train and employ prospective students upon graduation. 

  The school system hires a person at the central office to be in charge of Schools in Partnership Program.  This person serves as a liaison between schools and businesses.  Schools in the system can contact these businesses to form partnerships with the schools.  As a partner, the businesses will agree to support the schools financially and in different ways possible.
